Sportfishing in Costa Rica

Costa Rica is a very popular destination for fishing. All captains in Costa Rica operate under the "catch and release" policy, so that sportfishing should be a sustainable activity for generations to come. Have a look below for some popular areas and the types of fish they catch in each area.

Inland Fishing: Lake Arenal - Caño Negro Lagoon

Lake Arenal is a man-made fresh water lake that has been stocked with different species. Anglers particularly look for rainbow bass here.

Caño Negro Lagoon features tarpon and snook; also trout, rainbow bass, machaca, and tepemechin.

Caribbean Coast

Tarpon and snook. Anglers prefer the mouth of the Colorado River in the north where both fresh water and ocean species can be caught.

Southern Pacific Coast

This area is famous for its year round consistency. Both inside and outside the Golfo Dulce are prime areas. Many fishing boats are based in Golfito or Zancudo. Marlin and sailfish are the main targets in this area, but other record-breaking species include: tuna, wahoo, amber jack, jack crevalle, grouper, cubera, barracuda, rooster fish, sea bass, and snook.

Central Pacific / Gulf of Nicoya

Marlin and Sailfish are the big game for fishing in this area. Dorado, small, and yellowfin tuna are also plentiful and offer a good fight.

Northwestern Pacific Coast

Some of the nicest, most luxurious boats operate out of the Tamarindo / Flamingo area. Sailfish and other species are caught year round.

The Catalina and Murcielago Islands are also favorites among fishermen (and ladies). Boats operating in this area offer trips to these prime fishing spots.
